Every week we meet Chennai businesses running ₹3,000 routers as their only defence — or the opposite: paying for enterprise firewalls three sizes too big. This guide covers what actually matters when buying a business firewall in India in 2026.

Start with users and bandwidth, not brand

Firewall sizing is driven by two numbers: concurrent users and internet bandwidth. A 200 Mbps leased line with 40 users needs very different hardware than 1 Gbps with 300 users — especially once you enable SSL inspection, which can cut rated throughput by 60–80%. Always size against the vendor's threat protection throughput, not the headline firewall throughput.

Quick sizing reference

  • 5–50 users: FortiGate 40F/60F, Sophos XGS 87/107, SonicWall TZ-270/370 — roughly ₹35,000–₹90,000 with first-year security bundle
  • 50–300 users: FortiGate 100F, Sophos XGS 2100/2300, Cisco Firepower 1100 — roughly ₹1.5L–₹4L
  • 300+ users / campus: FortiGate 400F+, Palo Alto PA-1400, Checkpoint Quantum, deployed in HA pairs

The license is the product

A firewall without its security subscription is just an expensive router. Budget for the UTM bundle — IPS, web filtering, anti-malware, sandboxing (FortiGuard, Sophos X-Ops, SonicWall AGSS) — and prefer 3-year licenses, which typically save 25–35% versus annual renewal.

Five mistakes we fix most often

  • Buying grey-market imports with no India warranty or registerable license
  • Skipping SSL inspection sizing — the firewall chokes the day it's enabled
  • No HA pair for businesses where internet downtime stops billing
  • Default outbound-allow-all policies left in place after installation
  • Letting licenses lapse — protection silently stops while traffic keeps flowing

Fortinet vs Sophos vs SonicWall — honest take

Fortinet offers the best price-to-performance and the widest ecosystem (switches, APs, SASE) — our most-deployed brand. Sophos wins on management simplicity and tight integration with its endpoint/MDR stack — ideal when one team manages everything. SonicWall remains a value leader for small offices. All three protect well when correctly sized, configured and licensed — which is where an authorized partner earns its keep.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a business firewall cost in India?
The appliance is rarely the whole cost. A small-office box and a mid-range unit can differ by a factor of five, but the bigger variable is the security subscription bundle on top — IPS, antivirus, web filtering and sandboxing are licensed separately on most platforms, usually in one- or three-year terms. Budget for hardware plus bundle plus support as one line, not three. Tell us your user count and bandwidth and we will quote all three together with GST.
Should I buy from a dealer or direct from the vendor?
Fortinet, Sophos, SonicWall and Palo Alto do not sell direct to end customers in India — they sell through authorised channel partners. So the real question is which partner, not whether. What a partner adds is sizing (getting the model right before you buy), the GST invoice your finance team needs, installation and policy configuration, and someone to call when a licence is about to lapse.
What is the difference between a firewall wholesaler and a reseller?
In practice the terms are used interchangeably in India, and both mean an authorised channel partner. What actually differs is partner tier and whether they deploy. A box-shifter sells you the unit and disappears; a deployment partner sizes it, configures policy, migrates your rules and holds the support contract. The price difference between the two is usually smaller than the cost of a badly configured firewall.
Do I need an AMC, and what does it cover?
Support and the security subscription are separate things, and people confuse them. The subscription keeps the threat feeds updating; support — FortiCare and its equivalents — covers firmware updates, technical assistance and hardware replacement under RMA. Let support lapse and a failed unit becomes your problem to replace at full cost.
How long does firewall installation take?
A straightforward single-site deployment is usually a day, including policy configuration and testing. A migration from an existing firewall takes longer, because the work is auditing the rules you already have — most rule sets have accumulated entries nobody can explain. We stage the cutover outside business hours so there is no downtime window.
Can you migrate from our existing firewall without downtime?
Yes, and it is the normal way to do it. The new unit is configured and tested in parallel, rules are migrated and verified, and the cutover is a short switch during a quiet window. The migrations that go badly are the ones where somebody copies the old rule set across unexamined.
Which firewall brands do you supply in Chennai and across India?
Fortinet, Sophos, Cisco, Palo Alto, SonicWall, Check Point and Juniper, as an authorised partner for each, with on-site deployment across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Puducherry. Being multi-brand matters for sizing: the right answer for a 40-user office and a 300-user one are rarely the same vendor.
